‘Ye hota hai struggle’ – Fans react as Dhruv Jurel reveals how his mother supported him for his first cricket kit
Dhruv Jurel got his maiden Team India call-up yesterday night after the squad for the England Test series was announced.
On Friday, January 12, the Indian Cricket Board named the squad for the opening two Tests in the five-match series versus England. The most notable addition to the team was Dhruv Jurel, who received his first India call-up.
The 22-year-old gained notoriety in the IPL 2023 while playing for the Royals, amassing 152 runs with a strike rate of 172.73 over 11 innings. Despite this, Jurel has averaged 46.47 across the 15 games he has participated in, which is excellent for a first-class player.
After being selected, Jurel talked candidly about the struggles and his mother’s sacrifices in order for him to succeed as a cricket player with Dainik Jagran. Dhruv disclosed that his mother got cricket equipment for him by selling her gold necklace.
Dhruv Jurel spoke to Hindustan Times as he discussed his initial struggles to buy proper gear. He said, “I attended Army School, and during the holidays, I considered joining a cricket camp at Eklavya Stadium in Agra. I filled out the registration form without informing my dad. When he eventually found out, he scolded me. Despite this, he managed to borrow Rs 800 to purchase a cricket bat for me.”
The right-handed batter added, “Later, when I mentioned needing a complete cricket kit, my dad inquired about the cost, which I estimated to be around six to seven thousand rupees. He suggested I quit playing, but I was determined. I locked myself in the bathroom. In a surprising turn, my mom sold her gold chain to buy me the cricket kit.”
“I ask him about his preparations” : Dhruv Jurel on learning from IPL icons
The wicketkeeper-batter spoke about how he has been learning a lot in the Indian Premier League. He keeps taking notes from some of the legends in his IPL team, Rajasthan Royals.
The Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper-batter added, “I also keep talking to Jos (Buttler) bhaiya. I ask him about his preparations. How he targets certain bowlers and builds his innings. I keep taking notes.”
