India thrashed Sri Lanka by 302 runs

Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis chose to field after winning the toss. Their decision appeared vindicated when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma fell early, dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka. However, the match took a dramatic turn with the exceptional partnership of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, who amassed 188 runs for the second wicket. Gill recorded his second half-century of the tournament, while Kohli displayed remarkable form with his fifth fifty-plus score.

The duo seemed poised for centuries, but the return of Madushanka proved pivotal as he broke the partnership. Gill departed for an impressive 92, while Kohli narrowly missed a century, falling just 12 runs short of equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI century record. Despite subsequent wickets, Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role, contributing a rapid 82 off 56 balls with three fours and six sixes. Ravindra Jadeja added 35 runs off 24 balls in the final overs.

In response, India’s fast bowlers dominated Sri Lanka. Jasprit Bumrah made an early breakthrough, dismissing opener Pathum Nissanka on the first delivery. Mohammad Siraj’s exceptional spell saw him claim two wickets in his second over, reducing Sri Lanka to 14-4 after nine overs. Mohammed Shami further bolstered the attack, capturing two wickets in consecutive deliveries. Shami secured his second five-wicket haul of the tournament, while Ravindra Jadeja wrapped up the Sri Lankan innings with Madushanka’s wicket in the 20th over. This comprehensive victory affirmed India’s dominance and strengthened their quest for World Cup glory.
