In the meantime, there have been multiple rumours that Indian cricket will opt for split captaincy in the near future. Hardik Pandyas is expected to take over as the T20I captaincy from Rohit Sharma after a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against in the recent 20-20 World Cup 2022.

Pandya did well in the New Zealand series that followed the World Cup. He was in charge of the teams since Rohit was on a break. The interim captain led India to a 1-0 victory in the three-match series, which was plagued by rain.

Joining the chorus, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh has given his verdict on whether Hardik should replace Rohit as the captain.”If it happens, Hardik is the right option. In T20 format you can have someone like Ashish Nehra who recently retired from the game. He knows this better than, with all due respect to Rahul, we have played together for so many years, he has vast knowledge but this is a tricky format,” Harbhajan told PTI.

“Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20. Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” he added.

On the other hand, MS Dhoni was recently retained by his Indian T20 League franchise, Chennai. It is expected that the 2023 season of the tournament will be his last season as a player.
