Joe Root scored a match-winning century against New Zealand in the fourth innings of the first Test match at Lords. As it seems he has carried forward the momentum in the second match. He scored another century in the Test and broke several records during his innings. But a particular shot during his stay at the crease has grabbed the attention of the fans.

Root was batting 164 at this stage and Tim Southee was bowling to him. Root had already established his dominance over the Kiwi bowlers and it looked like he wanted to do something different. As the bowler bowled a ball round the off-stump Root reverse scooped it for a six over the third-man boundary. The ball was bowled at a good pace and a full length and Root’s innovation surprised the viewers as well as the opponents.

The way he was going about his business, it looked like Root will cross the 200 runs mark. But he ended his innings scoring 176 runs off 211 deliveries hitting 26 fours and a six.

Joe Root goes past several records with his centuries

During his stellar knock Root went past Sunil Gavaskar and Younis Khan to become the 12th highest run-getter in the history of the longest format of the game. He also became the 14th batter to go past the 10,000 runs mark during his century in the first test of the series. He is also now the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket for England just behind Sir Alistair Cook.

Speaking of the match, New Zealand put up a total of 553 runs on the board in the first innings while batting first in the match. While batting second England scored 539 runs trailing by 14 runs from the opposition’s score. In the third innings of the match, New Zealand is at 224 for 7 at stumps on day 4.

As the match resumes on day 5, England will look to get past the Kiwi batting line-up soon and chase down a moderate total in the last innings of the match. If Ben Stokes’ side manages to win this match they will take a 2-0 lead in the series.
