In the US Open Cup semifinals, Inter Miami and Lionel Messi staged an incredible comeback against FC Cincinnati by netting two late goals, notably an equaliser in the 97th minute to draw the game. For the first time after Messi’s arrival, Tata Martino used a different lineup, resting top forwards Josef Martinez as well as Robert Taylor, among others, in particular. The Herons gave up two goals in a row, leaving them behind at the hour mark, and the choice appeared to have backfired.

But as we’ve learned to anticipate, it’s never over until Lionel Messi declares it to be. After the break, the former Barcelona player switched gears and gave his most recent hitting partner Leonardo Campana two exquisite assists. The 23-year-old attacker from Ecuador proved why he was chosen by capitalising on Argentinean passes and extending the game’s duration.

As the game came to a close, Lionel Messi’s daring assist got everyone’s attention. The 36-year-old World Cup winner lobbed the ball over the Cincinnati squad to set up Campana for an easy goal.

Miami’s first try in the shootout was successful thanks to Messi, and both sides were unbeaten through four rounds. Drake Callender, the goalie for the Herons, stopped Nick Hagglund’s shot during round five, but Ben Cremaschi converted on his penalty kick to advance Miami to yet another championship game.

Houston defeated visitors Salt Lake 3-1 during extra time to win the other semifinal.  On September 27, the final will take place in Miami, and Lionel Messi is predicted to take home a second championship.
