WATCH: Gautam Gambhir opens up on defending Naveen-ul-Haq during IPL fight with Virat Kohli
Gautam Gambhir spoke about this fight and spoke about why he indulged after the game.
Gautam Gambhir, the former batsman for India, has spoken out about his notorious altercation with Virat Kohli at the IPL previously this year. Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq got into a verbal altercation during the game in the IPL. This was able to spark a major controversy around the match at Ekana Stadium.
When the Afghan bowler came out to bat, the former captain of India started to act very agitatedly towards him. It took the intervention of the umpires along with other players to get things under control. But after the game, things took a bad turn.
Naveen-ul-Haq defied Virat Kohli and declined to shake hands with him at the post-match routine of the teams shaking hands. When Gautam Gambhir also got involved, the situation got worse. To get things under control, other players needed to step in and keep him and Virat Kohli.
When India and Afghanistan faced off in the ODI World Cup 2023, the duo just put an end to their animosity. After giving each other a hug and a handshake, Kohli asked the audience not to jeer the Afghan player. In the meantime, Gautam Gambhir has left the Lucknow Super Giants as mentor. He would now be joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for the next IPL season.

When Gautam Gambhir was questioned about the altercation, he discussed it in an interview with the ANI podcast. After the game, the former India batsman stated that he was entitled to defend his players.
The former Team India opener said, “As a mentor, no one can come and walk over my players and I’ve got a very different belief. Till the time game was on, I had no right to interfere but once the game was over, if someone still gets into a heated argument with my players, I’ve got all the rights to defend them.”
