Aaron Finch, Australia’s longest-serving captain in the shortest format of the game, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday. Finch, who retired as Australia‘s One Day International (ODI) captain last year, has confirmed his retirement from T20Is.

In 2021, the opening batter led Australia to its first World T20 title. Finch, Australia’s most successful T20I captain, will continue to play for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL). Finch’s place in the Australian squad has come under scrutiny after his team failed to defend their 20-20 World Cup title at home in 2022. Last year, Australia failed to advance to the knockout stage of the competition.

“Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event. I’d like to thank my family, especially my wife Amy, my team-mates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their support to allow me to play the game I love at the highest level. I also want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career,” Finch said in a statement.

“Team success is what you play the game for and the maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021 and lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two memories I cherish the most. To be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been an incredible honour,” Finch added.

Finch, one of the best batters in T20I cricket, made his international debut against England in 2011. Finch scored 8,804 runs in his glittering international career. For Australia, the veteran batter also hit 17 ODI centuries and two T20I tons. The 36-year-old had a top score of 172 runs in T20I cricket, which also is the highest score in the shortest format at the international stage.
