Mathew Wade, the left-handed Australian wicketkeeper, is being considered as a backup captaincy option for the 20-20 World Cup in 2022, starting on October 16th. At present, Mathew Wade is being looked up as someone who can slot in for Aaron Finch if he is down with an injury or if he gets a string of low scores.
Mathew Wade did not lock in on a deal with Cricket Australia and so this means that he will receive only an incremental contract which comes up to $350,000 after playing 12 T20 Internationals for Australia. It includes the India series which had three games and all the games in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 till the semifinal and final.
Mathew Wade has remodeled himself as a player and has aced the role of playing in the middle order. He had started out as an opening batter but now he does this role with aplomb for the Australian side. He also has experience of leading the side in Bangladesh where Australia were trounced 4-1 in spin friendly conditions.
Mathew Wade is definitely in the mix with regards to Australia’s plans. This means that Australia have shifted away from the five-bowler template and have gone with the seven batsmen and four bowlers template with all-round options in the middle order to fill the slot of the fifth bowler.
“We’re always pretty positive because we play seven batters now – that’s a shift we made just before the World Cup last year – genuine batters and make up the fifth bowler in the top six,” Wade said during the India tour. “We’ve got a lot of depth in our batting and confidence that we can chase big scores.”
Mathew Wade also explained his thought process behind acing the chase at Mohali.
“You break it down more into sixes that we need to hit really. Three or four sixes in those last four overs were going to give us a pretty good chance to win the game”, He said.
