Australia began Day 2 of the 3rd Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on a strong note, with Cameron Green and Peter Handscomb putting on a solid display in the first hour. However, India comeback stronger to restrict the visitors, thanks to brilliant spells from Ravichandran Ashwin and Umesh Yadav.

While Ashwin took the breakthrough wicket of Handscomb, it was the pacer’s spell that wowed the crowd. Umesh took three wickets in his only spell on Day 2. He dismissed the well-set Cameron Green, to begin with, as he trapped him LBW.

He then got the wicket of Mitchell Starc with an excellent delivery that took his off-stump. The 35-year-old then dismissed Todd Murphy before Ashwin got the final wicket of Nathan Lyon to dismiss them for a score of 197.

In the meantime, Twitter has been praising Umesh Yadav for his excellent spell in the match. Many have even suggested that he should have been India’s primary spinner instead of Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. “Man I can’t tell how happy I am for this guy. My eyes are watering watching him take wickets and smile. It’s not only because of his father’s loss but because he gets very few matches,” wrote a fan.

As for the rest of the match, India was earlier restricted to a score of just 109 runs in the first innings. A brilliant spell by Matthew Kuhnemann helped him bag a five-wicket haul in the innings, while Nathan Lyon took three wickets.

In their batting innings, the Kangaroos had a great start as they tackled the spin conditions really well. Opening batter Usman Khawaja‘s outstanding knock of 60 runs in 147 deliveries put the home side under tremendous pressure. They eventually managed to get 197 runs and a lead of 88 runs in their first innings.

Following that, India scored 14 runs in the first four overs of their second batting innings, just before lunch. They will now look to capitalise on Shubhman Gill and Rohit Sharma’s strong start and set a good target for the visitors.
