Kolkata and Delhi locked horns in the 41st match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Delhi won the toss and elected to field first. There decision to bowl first proved right in the second over when Aaron Finch (3) was clean bowled by Chetan Sakariya, who was playing his first match of the season. Out of form, Venkatesh Iyer (6) struggled during his 12-ball stay before he was caught at short fine by Sakariya, trying to sweep against Axar Patel in the fifth over.

Debutant Baba Indrajith (6) couldn’t make any impression as he was caught at long-on by Rovman Powell off Kuldeep Yadav. Sunil Narine (0), who was promoted up the order to score some quick runs but was trapped lbw by Kuldeep on the very next ball.

At 35/4, skipper Shreyas Iyer (42) and Nitish Rana stitched a partnership of 48 runs. Iyer was looking good but he was caught by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps of Kuldeep Yadav. In the same over, Yadav completed his four-wicket haul after Andre Russell (0) was stumped by Pant. Rana’s 57 and Rinku Singh’s 23 took the team total to 146/9 with Mustafizur Rahman taking three wickets in the last over of the innings.

In reply, the Rishabh Pat-led side had a shocking start as Prithvi Shaw was caught and bowled by Umesh Yadav on the first ball of the chase. In the next over, Mitchell Marsh (13) was caught at deep square leg by Venkatesh Iyer off Harshit Rana. At 17/2, in-form David Warner (42) and Lalit Yadav stitched a partnership of 65 runs before the former was bounced out by Yadav.

Lalit Yadav (22) was then trapped lbw by Narine in the 11th over before Pant (2) was caught behind by Indrajith off Yadav in the next over to leave Delhi tottering at 85-5.  Axar Patel (24) played a few good shots before he was run-out with a win still 32 runs away. However, an unbeaten partnership of 37 runs between Rovman Powell (33*) and Shardul Thakur (8*) won the game for the team by four wickets.
