Mumbai and Hyderabad locked horns in the 65th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After winning the toss, the Blue Brigade chose to bowl first. The 2016 winners had a slow start as Abhishek Sharma was struggling to get going. He could score nine off ten balls before being caught at mid-off by Mayank Markande off Daniel Sams.

Priyam Garg, who was playing his first game of the season, came out to bat and increased the scoring rate. Garg scored 42 off 26 balls and stitched a partnership of 78 runs with Rahul Tripathi before being caught and bowled by Ramandeep Singh. In came, Nicholas Pooran and added another 76 runs with Tripathi.

Pooran got 38 off 22 balls before he was taken a deep backward square leg by Markande off Riley Meredith. Tripathi followed next after scoring 76 off 44 balls as he was caught at long-on by Tilak Varma off Singh. This wicket decreased the scoring rate for the Orange Army. From 174 in 17.2 overs, the team finished 193/6 with the likes of Aiden Markram, skipper Kane Williamson, and Washington Sundar failing to finish on a high.

In reply, the five-time winners got off to a dream start. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan stitched a partnership of 95 runs in just 10.4 overs. Sharma scored 48 off 36 balls before he was caught at deep midwicket by substitute fielder Jagadeesan Suchith off Washington Sundar. Kishan, who scored 43 off 34 balls followed in the next over. He was caught sharply at mid-on by Garg off Umran Malik.

Three overs later, Malik gave twins jolts to the opposition with the wickets of Tilak Varma (8) and Daniel Sams (15). Varma couldn’t handle the sharp bouncer and was caught by skipper Williamson. Sams also became the victim of the bouncer and was caught by Garg. At this stage, the team needed 67 runs off last five overs. Tim David’s innings of 46 off 18 balls brought the equation to 19 off 13 balls. However, him getting run-out at the end of the 18th over meant that the team lost the game by 3 runs with Ramandeep Singh’s (14 off six) going in vain.
