The player auction for the inaugural edition of the SA20 League concluded on Monday (19th September). For some of the players, there was a bidding war between the six new franchises. Interestingly all six franchises are owned by the Indian T20 League teams.

MI Cape Town (Reliance), Pretoria Capitals (JSW), Paarl Royals (Royals Sports Group), Durban Super Giants (RPG-Sanjiv Goenka), Johannesburg Super Kings (India Cements), Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kaviya Maran), participated in the auctions on Monday. Here are the top five most expensive players at the auction.

5. Sisanda Magala- Sunrisers Eastern Cape- R 5.4 M (INR 2.43 crores)

The Sunriesers Eastern Cape Town had some of the most expensive bids in the auction. One of their most expensive bids was pacer Sisanda Magala, for whom they paid R 5.4M. Magala may not be well-known to many, but he has been among the continent’s most reliable death bowlers.

With his bowling prowess and power-hitting skills at the end of the innings, the veteran 31-year-old campaigner is a benefit to any team.

4. Wayne Parnell- Pretoria Capitals- R 5.6 M (INR 2.56 crores)

After being away from the T20I team for nearly five years, Wayne Parnell returned earlier this year and is in better shape than ever. Pretoria Capitals, a team owned by the Delhi franchise, acquired him for R 5.6M.

Since his return, the 33-year-old left-arm pacer has consistently performed well for the national team and even claimed a five-for in his recent international match against Ireland. Pretoria Capitals have resolved the lead pacer issue with this purchase.

3. Marco Jansen- Sunrisers Eastern Cape- R 6.1M (INR 2.74 crores)

The young pacer Marco Jansen has been expressing everyone with his skills across formats. At the SA20 auction, the Sunrisers Eastern Capetown team paid a whopping R 6.1M for the aggressive pacer.

Given that the 22-year-old is one of the most highly sought-after players in the world, it is not surprising that Sunrisers Eastern Cape had to spend a lot of money to sign him.

2. Rilee Rossouw- Pretoria Capitals- R 6.9M (INR 3.1 crores)

The South African star Rilee Rossouw, who rose to become the second-most expensive player at the auction, is finally receiving his dues. Pretoria Capitals spent a tonne of money to acquire him for R 6.9 million in the SA20 auction.

His recent stellar performance is what drew teams to make offers for him. He had a productive T20 Blast earlier this year, and in the second T20I match against England in July, he scored a stylish unbeaten 96 for the Proteas.

1. Tristan Stubbs- Sunrisers Eastern Cape- R 9.2M (INR 4.1 crores)

As the most expensive player in the first SA20 player auction, Tristan Stubbs’ acquisition caused a frenzy in the auction room. Sunrisers Eastern Cape eventually acquired him for R 9.2M after engaging in a bitter bidding battle with MI Cape Town and Jo’burg Super Kings.

Any team would be thrilled to have the 22-year-old in their squad for to his impeccable hitting. Without a doubt, it is a valuable addition for them.  With a strike rate of 160.65 in the T20s, he will be one of the most anticipated players of the tournament.
