The Commonwealth Games 2022 is all set to commence from 28th July. India, having sent a strong contingent looks hopeful for a good showing in this edition’s Commonwealth Games.

Although the Indian contingent is strong, there are some athletes who did not get a chance to join others for the CWG 2022 and will be sorely missed.

Let’s look at the top five Indian athletes who will miss the CWG 2022.

Saina Nehwal (Badminton)

Saina Nehwal is one of the biggest names in Badminton. She has won Gold in the Commonwealth on not just one but two occasions. Naturally, her inclusion in the Indian team would have given a huge boost to the country’s hopes but a difference in ideology between Nehwal and the Badminton Association became a huge roadblock.

Nehwal not agreeing to go through trials while Badminton Association insisted on it meant that the ace shuttler had to give the CWG 2022 a miss.

Mary Kom (Boxing)

Mary Kom fell prey to the same issue that Saina Nehwal has highlighted in her question to the Badminton Association. Nehwal insisted that trials could injure an athlete and sadly that is what happened with Mary Kom.

While playing against Nitu Ganghas the CWG defending champion fell and broke her knee. She was ruled out of the CWG trials and the CWG 2022 as a result of it.

S Dhanalakshmi (Athletics)

Sprinter Dhanalakshmi was part of the 2020 Olympics and showed great potential going into the CWG 2022. Before the multi-sports event, however, the sprinter tested positive for banned drugs and has been ruled out from the CWG 2022.

She has also been handed a provisional suspension for breaking the rules. The test was conducted by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics and has put dark clots on the sanctity of the sport.
