1) Boycott Indian T20 League – for retaining its Chinese sponsor:
India has a tense relationship with China and people even went on to boycott Chinese products. In addition to it, it was such a time that the Chinese apps were getting banned one by one in India. Famous games and budding apps were removed from the Play Store and App Store.
But in a twist, the Indian cricket board announced that they’ll retain ‘Vivo’ as their sponsor in the 2020 edition of the Indian T20 League. This led to a backlash from the fans who were sceptical of the brand and started trending ‘#boytcottindiant20league’ on Twitter. The hashtag received millions of tweets and the Indian cricket board succumbed to the pressure as they replaced it with a fantasy app as the sponsor.
2) Boycott the Chennai team – for buying a Sri Lankan player in the auction
The Chennai team has a huge fan base in India and especially in the state of Tamil Nadu. However, the state has a long history with Sri Lanka. The Tamil natives were believed to have faced war crimes and this remains etched in their hearts even now. Chennai team bought Maheesh Theekshana in the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League auction.
Soon after they announced the player’s arrival at the franchise, people started recalling the incident in 2009 and called on people to boycott the team. ‘#boycottchennaiteam’ trended right away and the team, however, went on to play with the player in the league.
3) Boycott Pakistan – due to political tensions ahead of 20-20 World Cup 2021
India and Pakistan are arch-rivals and whenever the two teams clash, fans get excited and consider it to be a high-octane one. Ahead of the India-Pakistan clash in the T20 World Cup 2021, people started to trend ‘#boycottpakistan’ on Twitter and it went viral.
Fans from Pakistan responded by retweeting images from the 2017 Champions Trophy final where India lost to Pakistan. The Men in Blue, however, lost to Pakistan in the 20-20 World Cup 2021 by 10 wickets. Pakistan defeated India for the first time in a world cup match in 2021.
