The Indian T20 League 2022 has reached the stage where only one of the two teams, i.e. Gujarat or Rajasthan, can win the title. Both sides will battle it out in the final on May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. These teams had finished in the top two spots on the points table. Given their performances in the league stages, both teams deserve to be in the final.

However, there are a few teams that could have been at least in the playoffs. These teams had a good auction which meant that they had a decent squad. However, they couldn’t play to their potential and were crashed out. Today, we will discuss the three teams which had a great auction but didn’t have a great season.

Teams that failed this year

  1. Delhi Capitals

The team bought players such as David Warner, Kuldeep Yadav, Yash Dhull, Srikar Bharat, Sarfaraz Khan, Mustafizur Rahman, Mitchell Marsh, Lungi Ngidi, Chetan Sakariya, Rovman Powell, Shardul Thakur, etc. Ideally, the presence of these players can easily help a side qualify for the playoffs with ease. However, they missed the spot by a whisker after losing to Mumbai in their last league game.

There are quite a few reasons for this. Aussie players such as Warner and Marsh were unavailable for the first few games due to national duties. Anrich Nortje couldn’t play a lot of matches due to injury and most of the players didn’t live up to the expectations.

2. Kolkata

After the auction, the team had players such as Alex Hales, Sam Billings, Mohammed Nabi, Chamika Karunartne, Shreyas Iyer, Sam Billings, Rinku Singh, Umesh Yadav, Pat Cummins, Tim Southee, etc. The team had appointed Shreyas Iyer as their skipper given his record with Delhi in seasons 2019 and 2020, where the team reached the playoffs.

The team had a great start as they won three out of their first four games. However, they fell off the track as they went on to lose five games in a row and finished seventh in the points table.

3. Hyderabad

The team had players such as Abhishek Sharma, Marco Jansen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Washington Sundar, Nicholas Pooran, Rahul Tripathi, etc. The team had a poor start with two back-to-back losses.

However, they came back with five wins on the trot and looked like going into the playoffs. The law of averages caught up with the team and thus, they lost five games and finished eighth in the points table.
