8th September 2022 will forever be remembered as the date when Virat Kohli finally scored his 71st international hundred. The undisputed King of the cricketing world was seen at his vintage best as he smashed the ball to all parts of the ground against Afghanistan last night. Kohli’s hundred was widely celebrated across the cricketing fraternity who had been waiting for the big moment for 1020 days.

What made the moment even more priceless was Kohli’s reaction after reaching the milestone. The batter just smiled upon reaching the landmark and didn’t have any wild celebration. However, the nation celebrated Kohli’s century like a festival. On that note, let’s take a look at three reasons behind the nation going berserk after Kohli’s ton:

  1. 20-20 World Cup is around the corner –

With the 20-20 world cup approaching, the entire nation was eagerly waiting for Kohli to return to his usual best. The 34-year-old, who has been awarded the prestigious ‘player of the tournament’ twice at the 20-20 world cup, will now be seen at his absolute best at the marquee event. The star batter has single-handedly carried the Indian batting in all the editions of the world cup he’s played. The return of Kohli back to form is the biggest positive for India from the Asia cup despite failing to qualify for the finals of the event.

2. A wait of 1020 days –

Over the past 1020 days, the one common question found on everyone’s lips was when will Kohli score his 71st international hundred. The wait was getting longer and longer with each day passing. The batter had just one 90+ score during this period and four 80+ scores.

But the magical three-figure-mark eluded the modern-day great making his fans restless. However, all the wait came to an end on Thursday after his incredible knock of 122 off just 61 balls. Kohli sent the entire nation into a frenzy with his scintillating pull shot which went over the boundary and completed his first ever hundred in T20 internationals.

3. The record levelling 71st hundred –

After his hundred last night, Kohli is now levelled with Ricky Ponting on the second position in the list of most hundreds scored in international cricket. The former Indian captain is now only behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who has 100 international centuries to his name.

Ever since Kohli became the backbone of the Indian team, fans have been expecting him to break Tendulkar’s record. The star batter will be turning 34 this year. Hence, he has a long way to go before he reaches close to the ‘Master Blaster’.
