The Indian T20 League 2022 has culminated with the Hardik Pandya-led side Gujarat emerging as the champions in their debut season. Gujarat contested against Rajasthan in the summit clash for the title. On the day of final Gujarat dominated the Men in Pink to clinch their maiden title.

While Rajasthan were playing their second final in the history of the tournament after their title-winning effort in the inaugural edition of the tournament they failed to maintain their 100 percent win record in the finals of the tournament. While there were some stand-out performances from certain players for Sanju Samson’s side, there were also some glaring loopholes that turned out to be the prime reasons why Rajasthan failed to win their second ITL title.

Here we take a look at the prime reasons for Rajasthan’s failure to win the title.

1. Over dependency of Jos Buttler in batting: Jos Buttler had the best Indian T20 League season this year. He scored 863 runs in the season at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05.

Rajasthan depended too much on Buttler in their batting efforts. It was mostly upon him to set up the stage and then also go for the kill, while others were good enough for supporting roles. This caused them about 25-30 runs in the final, where Buttler found it hard to go about his business fluently. So, Rajasthan lacked another batter who could have shared the responsibilities with Buttler.

2. Over dependency of Yuzvendra Chahal: Yuzvendra Chahal was the prime weapon for Rajasthan in their bowling department. He picked up 27 wickets in the tournament from 17 matches. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker.

While Yuzi was in great form with the bowl, he lacked support from the other end. Rajasthan was seemingly lacking in enough wicket-taking options. This problem also surfaced in the finals, where Yuzi’s failure to pick up wickets cost them the match as there was no one else to back up.

3. Lack of proper death bowlers: While Rajasthan was decent with their bowling efforts in the powerplay, they struggled a lot in the death overs.

Trent Boult did the job in the powerplays, but in the death overs, they did not have a proper pacer. Prasidh Krishan was their prime option for the phase in the tournament and he conceded over 11 runs per over failing to live up to the expectations. They had to try and fill the hole by using bowlers like Kuldeep Sen till they found Obed McCoy, who partly solved their problem. But ahead of the next season, Rajasthan will surely look for a better death bowling option.
