This player likely to lead Punjab in Indian T20 League 2022

Punjab co-owner Mohit Burman has hinted about the Punjab skipper for the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League. KL Rahul, who led the team in seasons 2020 and 2021, was signed by Lucknow ahead of the auction. The team had retained their vice-captain Mayank Agarwal and uncapped Indian left-arm medium-pacer Arshdeep Singh.

The 2014 finalists have signed Shikhar Dhawan, who led Hyderabad in the same year. It was reported that Dhawan will lead the side this season. However, Burman has hinted that Mayank Agarwal might lead the team. He added that a senior player in the team will understand the thinking of the coach easily. Agarwal has been part of the team since 2018.

‘I think it’s a big advantage to have a senior player who has played with you before to lead the team. He understands the thinking of the coach.

“He has a good rapport with the coaches and the idea is to give him a strong bunch of players who fill up all the positions,” Burman said in an interview with News9.

The 53-year-old added that the team strategy was to put strong lieutenants for every position in the team. The team has bought players such as Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Rahul Chahar, Liam Livingstone, Odean Smith, Sandeep Sharma, Raj Bawa, Nathan Ellis, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, etc.

“Our strategy was to put very strong lieutenants in every position so it would be much easier for the captain to not only lead but be a team player. Therefore, I wanted to give an equal playing side which will come across as a strong team than to have one strong leader.”
