Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah on Thursday announced that Indian women cricketers will get the same match fee as their male counterparts as the board takes the first step towards tackling discrimination.

Shah in a series of tweets said that the Indian Cricket Board is implementing a pay equity policy for its contracted women players.

According to the Indian Cricket Board statement on Thursday, the women’s cricketers will be paid Rs. 15 lakh, Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh, respectively, for Test, ODI and T20Is, respectively, they feature in.

“I’m pleased to announce Indian Cricket Board’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted Indian Cricket Board Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” Shah tweeted.

“The Indian Cricket Board Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” he added.

Former India captain Mithali Raj welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India! The pay equity policy along with the Women’s Indian T20 League next year, we are ushering into a new era for women’s cricket in India. Thank you Jay Shah Sir and Indian Cricket Board for making this happen. Really happy today.”

The Indian Cricket Board recently at its 91st annual general meeting approved to conduct the Women’s Indian T20 League from next year onwards. The India women’s team under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur reclaimed its Asia Cup crown for the seventh time and also clinched a historic 3-0 ODI series clean sweep in and against England amid a run-out controversy and the first-ever silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

However, a certain section of fans were unhappy with the landmark move and expressed their disappointment on the announcement of equal pay. They argued that since Men’s cricket bring more viewership and sponsors why should women get the same pay when they fail to attract crowd.
