According to recent reports, as many as 20 players have been identified in advance for the ODI World Cup 2023 to avoid a selection jumble during the tournament’s build-up. One of the key takeaways from the board’s review meeting was the decision for the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to collaborate with Indian T20 League franchises on player workload management.

The Indian Cricket Board wants players to manage their workload during the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League, which may require candidates to play up to 18 matches in two months, to avoid potential injuries. Team India also has a busy international calendar year ahead of them.

However, the possibility of the board requesting that they rest a specific player or limit his involvement is not expected to be entertained. “The BCCI cannot ask the franchises to rest a player for any IPL game. They can of course monitor the workload and ask for any data to be shared, but they cannot fix a cap and say a certain player can play only X number of matches or can bowl only X number of overs,” a franchise official told the Indian Express.

The T20 competition in 2023 is set to begin on either March 31 or April 1, following the conclusion of the ODI series against Australia. After the tournament concludes on June 1, Team India could compete in the Test Championship final straight away.

Indian T20 League’s compliance with other boards

Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) frequently include workload management as a possibility in their No Objection Certificate (NOC) documents, which are required to compete. So far, franchises have followed the rule, and this is expected to continue in the coming season.

The tournament’s upcoming season will see the return of the home-and-away format. The franchises assembled their teams at the mini-auction held on December 23 in Kochi.
