The Hundred 2022: Match 1 Southern Brave vs Welsh Fire Match Report
Southern Brave won the match by nine wickets.
The newest format of cricket ‘The Hundred’ finally made a return on Wednesday to enthral the cricket fans with its innovative playing laws. The opening encounter of the season was between Southern Brave and Welsh Fire at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. Southern Brave captain James Vince called it correctly at the toss and invited the Welsh Fire team to bat first. The Welsh team got off to a worst-possible start as they lost the opener, Joe Clarke, for a duck on the fourth ball of the match.
Their poor start was further exacerbated as they lost batters Tom Banton and Ollie Pope on the score of 16, making the scoreboard 16/3. The Welsh innings was held together by Ben Duckett as he scored 40 off 31 balls smashing five fours in his innings. No other batter apart from Duckett could make a significant contribution to the total as a result the Welsh team could only manage 107 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 100 balls.
Craig Overton and Chris Jordan picked up two wickets each from the Southern Brave team. Coming out to chase the target, the openers Alex Davies and James Vince gave a blistering start to their team adding 72 runs in just 49 balls. They took the Welsh bowlers to the cleaners as they took the game away from them. Their outstanding partnership was finally ended as Alex Davies was dismissed by Jake Ball.
Captain Vince continued his breath-taking innings as he scored 71 off just 41 balls smashing eight fours and a six. Courtesy of this brilliant knock, the Southern Brave reached home in just 70 balls winning the game by nine wickets. James Vince was awarded Player of the Match for his quick-fire knock.
The second match of the competition will be played today at Kennington Oval, London between Oval Invincibles and London Spirit starting at 11: 00 PM (IST).
