Sunil Gavaskar lauds Bangalore’s decision to give leadership reins to Faf du Plessis

Three-time finalists Bangalore named Faf du Plessis as their skipper ahead of the 15th season of the Indian T20 League. The franchise had signed him after battling with Delhi and Chennai in the mega auction last month. Notably, Plessis hasn’t led an ITL franchise, even though he led the South Africa team across formats. Former South Africa player has led his national team in 115 games across formats.

Talking about his ITL career, the right-hander has played for Chennai and now-defunct Pune from 2011 to 2021. Meanwhile, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar is mighty pleased with Bangalore giving leadership reins to Faf. Gavaskar added that Plessis led the South African side when it was going through turmoil and managed to get the team back on track.

“Loads of captaincy experience, loads of leadership quality you see in Faf du Plessis. I am not surprised at all. Remember, he took South African cricket ahead. There was a time in South African cricket when there was a bit of turmoil. He managed to get the team together and get South Africa right up to the top. Clearly, a terrific decision by RCB to hand over the captaincy to Faf du Plessis,” Gavaskar said.

The 1983 World Cup winner further added that Virat Kohli’s will always be involved with Faf, giving inputs on captaincy. “Don’t for a moment think just because Kohli is not captain, his performance is going to go down. We have seen him even now in Tests, how he is all the time with Rohit Sharma, trying to help him out. His involvement is total, he wants his team to win, whether he is captain or not. So that is what he will do with RCB,” he added.
