Bangladesh vs India 2022
Star India pacer ruled out of Bangladesh series due to shoulder injury
Umran Malik has been announced as the replacement for Shami.
Fast bowler Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh, starting on Sunday, due to a shoulder injury, Indian Cricket Board made a statement on Sunday. According to reports, Shami suffered the injury during a training session after he returned from Australia after the 20-20 World Cup 2022. Shami could also miss the upcoming two-Test series, beginning in Chattogram on December 14.
“Fast bowler Mohammed Shami sustained a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead up to the ODI series against Bangladesh. He is currently under the supervision of the Indian Cricket Board Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru and will not be able to take part in the three-match series,” said Indian Cricket Board in a press release.
The extent of Shami’s injury is not known yet. The Bengal pacer was expected to spearhead India’s pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Shami is also in the scheme of things for next year’s ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in India. However, he will be missed the most in the Test series if he fails to recover in time.
“Shami’s absence from three ODI games is definitely a factor but a bigger worry is his likely absence from Tests where he is supposed to spearhead the attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence,” an Indian Cricket Board source was quoted as saying by PTI.
Shami’s injury can be a huge cause of concern for India, especially in Tests as they need to win all of their remaining Test matches to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship next year to be held at Oval in June.
Shami has taken 216 wickets in Test cricket from 60 matches at an average of 27.45 and a strike rate of 50.1. He has picked up 152 wickets in ODIs at an average of 25.72 and a strike rate of 27.5. He also has 24 wickets to his name in T20Is.
Umran Malik has been announced as the replacement of Shami in the ODI squad. Malik recently made his ODI debut in the ODI series against New Zealand. The 23-year-old bagged three wickets in as many matches
