The much-awaited Lankan Premier League, the premier T20 competition of Sri Lanka has been officially postponed due to the country’s crippling economic condition at the moment. A few days back, Sri Lanka Cricket announced the complete schedule of the tournament which was confirmed to be held from 1st August to 21st August 2022. This season was supposed to be the third edition of the grand event.

Sri Lanka Cricket officially announced the decision to postpone the league through a press release on their website on Sunday. The board also took to Twitter to share the official announcement. The cricket board cited the request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament, as the reason behind postponing the league.

In a statement by SLC, it said, “This decision was taken by the SLC, following a request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament, which cited the current ‘economic situation,’ in the country, as not conducive to hosting the tournament.”

Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic crisis in its history but cricket is still on in the nation. The Sri Lankan team is currently playing a two-match Test series against Pakistan after the successful tour by Australia in the nation recently. The Sri Lankan team has been able to give their country a few moments of joy as they beat Australia by 3-2 in the ODI series last month.

This series victory was the first win by Sri Lanka against Australia in an ODI series at home since 1992. The Lankan team also came back strongly after losing the first Test against Australia as they beat them in the second match by an innings and 50 runs.

Batter Dinesh Chandimal and spinner Prabath Jayasuriya were the stars of the show as Sri Lanka thrashed Australia at Galle in the second Test. With this win, Sri Lanka climbed to the number three spot in the World Test Championship standings as captain Dimuth Karunaratne has his eyes set on playing the WTC final next year.
