Gujarat beat Chennai by three wickets to win their fifth match of the season. Winning the toss, Gujarat decided to bowl first at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Ruturaj Gaikwad was looking in good touch, but the in-form Robin Uthappa lost his wicket early on. Mohammad Shami got the breakthrough in the third over. Moeen Ali also fell soon as Alzari Joseph took his wicket in the 6th over. Chennai scored 39 runs in the powerplay. With Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu in the middle, the men in yellow needed a good partnership to get hold of the game.

Gaikwad went on to register his season’s first half-century. Rayudu (46 runs in 31 balls) succumbed to Alzarri Joseph in the 15th over after the pair scored 92 runs for the fourth wicket. Gaikwad, too, was quickly dismissed by Yash Dayal in the 17th over. At this moment, Chennai was 131 runs for four wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube played short cameos towards the end, which guided Chennai to a par total. Jadeja scored 22 runs in 12 balls while Dube scored 19 runs in 17 balls before he was run out on the last ball of the innings. Chennai managed to reach 169 runs in the first innings.

Gujarat did not put their best foot forward in the chase, losing three wickets in a row. Shubman Gill was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over by Mukesh Choudhary. In the following over, Maheesh Theekshana accounted for Vijay Shankar. Theekshan then took the wicket of Abhinav Manohar in the fourth over to reduce Gujarat to 16 for three wickets. The men in dark blue reached 37 runs in the powerplay with Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller in the middle.

However, Saha could not hold on for long either. Jadeja dismissed him in the eighth over for a team score of 48 runs. Rahul Tewatia joined Miller at the crease. Miller was looking in great touch while Tewatiya supported him by rotating strike. However, Dwayne Bravo got the better of Tewatia in the 13th over. Gujarat was 87 for five at this point. Rashid Khan joined the crease and he gave Gujarat what they needed.

He played the most unorthodox shots and hit Chris Jordan for 25 runs in the 18th over. Before that over, a win looked far from Gujarat as they needed 48 runs in three overs. Even though Rashid Khan lost his wicket in the penultimate over, Miller scored the required 13 runs in the final over. Khan added 40 runs in 21 balls to do his part. Miller remained not out on 94 off 51 balls.
