The 2023 Asia Cup has come to an end with Team India lifting the coveted title for the eighth time, and now attention is fast turning to the premier 50-over tournament – the ODI World Cup. The ODI World Cup Schedule 2023 was jointly announced by BCCI and ICC on 27 June 2023. India will host the marquee event from October 5 to November 19 across ten vibrant Indian cities. The 13th edition of the prestigious event will kick off with the previous edition’s finalists England and New Zealand clashing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Cricket Governing Body released the revised schedule for the 2023 World Cup on August 9 after some of the originally announced dates clashed with some major Indian festivals. A total of nine matches were forced to be rescheduled due to major celebrations like Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali. One of the notable changes in the updated schedule is the date of the blockbuster clash, India vs. Pakistan. The arch-rivals were originally slated to face off on October 15, but that day coincides with the start of a prominent Hindu festival and will now take place on October 14.
The governing body considered rescheduling the matches as the massive involvement of the people of Ahmedabad in the festival made it more likely that the authorities would not be able to manage the game effectively. Two of India’s matches, including the final league match against the Netherlands, were rescheduled, while three of Pakistan’s matches were rescheduled.
Eight of the 10 teams had already qualified for the biggest cricket tournament, with the remaining two teams determined through World Cup qualifiers. Notably, the two-time ODI World Cup champions West Indies failed to qualify for the first time after their poor show in the Qualifiers. Each team plays in a round-robin format, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals.
The hosts – Men in Blue- will begin their campaign with a high-profile clash against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8. The warm-up matches will take place from September 29 to October 3 in Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad.
