‘NZ kabhi nahi jeet payegi Eng se’ – Fans react as England clinch ODI series after epic 100-run win during 4th ODI

England’s confidence would be sky-rocketed after this series win against New Zealand.

During the fourth one-day international on Friday, England defeated New Zealand by 100 runs to take a 3-1 series lead thanks to opening batsman Dawid Malan’s outstanding century and Moeen Ali’s four wickets. When Jos Buttler claimed the toss and decided to bat at Lord’s, Malan scored a 114-ball 127 including 14 fours as well as three sixes to set the stage for a solid 311/9 in 50 overs.

New Zealand needed to win the ODI in order to level the series, got off to a bad start when they lost star opener Devon Conway quickly after Buttler’s superb run out. Henry Nicholls who scored 41 offered the visitors a little shot for victory, but Moeen’s sharp bowling put an end to the danger, despite the spinner’s denial of a hat-trick on the route to statistics of 4-50.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra also starred with the bat for New Zealand and fought courageously to the end, reaching 61 runs off 48 balls, but Sam Curran’s brilliant yorker put an end to his fight.

Tim Southee did not take part in the game after broken thumb

Tim Southee’s broken thumb while attempting a catch caused New Zealand to be one batter short as their innings ended with 211 during the 39th over. They lost the game by a huge margin of 100 runs but have a fair few positives to take home.

But the ruling out of Tim Southee might be an issue that New Zealand need to find a solution to. New Zealand’s white-ball skipper Kane Williamson is also just recovering from a knee injury. The last thing that the Kiwis would want is their veteran pacer to be ruled out from the tournament before it even started.

Tom Latham, the stand-in skipper for New Zealand spoke to the media after the series loss and discussed the injury situation. He said, “When you’re faced with those challenges (injuries), it’s important for guys to step up. Southee’s in good spirits. He’ll be assessed further to see how he is. Fingers crossed.”
