Not MS Dhoni but this player helped Robin Uthappa move to Chennai

Robin Uthappa has been an important part of the Chennai team. In early 2021, Uthappa was transferred to the Yellow Brigade ahead of the player auction. However, he only played four games in the season as Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad were the preferred opening pair. Notably, the right-hander played a match-winning inning of 63 off 44 balls, including seven fours and two hits over the ropes against Delhi in Qualifier One.

Robin Uthappa recently shed light on his transfer to the Chennai team and said he got a call from Chennai CEO Kasi Viswanathan who confirmed his transfer to the team. While many thought that it was MSD who brought Uthappa in the team, the Karnataka batter revealed that not Dhoni but Ambati Rayudu helped him get into the Chennai team.

“Kerala had a Syed Mushtaq game against Andhra in Bombay. Amba [Rayudu] was leading the Andhra side. Rayudu asked, ‘what’s happening with you’. He was like, ‘Bro, I’ll do one thing. I will give you Kasi Sir’s [CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan] number. You call Kasi sir. We want a player like you in our team. Why don’t you give him a call?,” said in a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Robin Uthappa has been good for Chennai this season so far. While he hasn’t played a big knock yet, he has given the team some fiery starts. Unfortunately, Chennai is yet to win a game in the Indian T20 League so far, losing all their three encounters.
