Former India captain and mentor of the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Mithali Raj, has come up with an expansion idea. Mithali has expressed her belief that expanding the tournament to multiple cities will significantly contribute to developing new audiences. She also believes that it will help elevate the profile of the competition.

In the inaugural edition, the WPL was exclusively hosted in Mumbai. But this year, the Indian Cricket Board has extended the tournament to Delhi and Bengaluru. Mithali emphasised the positive impact of taking the WPL to different cities, stating, “If the WPL moves to every city, it gives the franchise a chance to develop a new audience that can come and watch it play. This will only improve the profile of the tournament and the franchises.”

The move is seen as a strategic step to broaden the fan base and create a more extensive reach for women’s cricket. Reflecting on her role as a mentor for the Gujarat Giants, Mithali Raj expressed her feelings. She expressed her enjoyment of working with the team within the expansive platform of WPL.

She highlighted her satisfaction in mentoring young players, sharing her knowledge, and aiding them in delivering their best performances. Mithali’s presence adds valuable experience and guidance to the team, contributing to their overall development.

“I have been enjoying this role as mentor, working with young players, sharing my knowledge, and helping them stay in a good space and perform their roles to the best of their ability,” she said.

As the Gujarat Giants gear up for their opening match against defending champions the Mumbai Indians, captain Beth Mooney expressed confidence in the team. Mooney noted the positive energy within the group, emphasising the cohesion built over time. The team’s preparations and hard work are anticipated to translate into a strong performance during the tournament.

She said, “There’s a really excellent sort of vibe in the group, as it has been together for a little while now. We worked through some things last week, and they have come to fruition.

“So, there’s a keen sense of anticipation for the first game. And I know the eleven that take the field tomorrow night will take full advantage of that and put their best foot forward.” The Giants will look to overcome their past performance and start a successful campaign.
