‘Massive Respect’ – Twitter in awe of Dinesh Chandimal’s masterclass against Australia in second Test
Dinesh Chandimal is currently unbeaten on 118
The second Test between Australia and Sri Lanka is slowly moving ahead towards a thrilling finish. The hosts have got 67 runs more than Australia’s first innings total. They’ve got Dinesh Chandimal batting at the crease who’s unbeaten on 118, and Ramesh Mendis who’s just come out to the crease. Sri Lanka will be looking to get their lead past 150 on Day four, and put the Australian batters under pressure. Sri Lanka ended Day three on 431/6 after bowling Australia for 364 runs in the first innings.
Chandimal occupied the crease well walking in to bat at the score of 186/3. He stitched a partnership of 83 runs along with Angelo Mathews for the fourth wicket. He got into another good partnership with Kamindu Mendis of 133 runs for the fifth wicket.
The 32-year-old batter looked unfazed by the Australian attack and kept batting flawlessly from one end. His innings was studded with nine fours and a six as he reached the three-figure mark for the 13th time in his career. This was also his second hundred against the country. The batter has scored 491 runs in 15 innings at an average of 37 with two hundreds and one fifty to his name.
Chandimal burst onto the scene as a talented young guy and impressed everyone with his stroke play early on in his career. He currently averages 41 in cricket’s longest format. The first memorable knock of Chandimal’s career came against England when he scored a magnificent hundred at Lord’s in ODI cricket. His one of the most memorable hundreds of his Test career came against India at Galle in 2015.
The star batter scored 59 in the first innings and made a terrific 162 in the second innings. Courtesy of this mammoth innings by Chandimal, Sri Lanka set a target of 175 runs for India to chase. Chasing the target in the fourth innings India faltered as they fell 63 runs short of Sri Lanka’s target. Chandimal was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for his incredible performance.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the star batter’s century:
For some players, a particular innings from a particular venue, would define their personality and legacy, it doesn't matter how many other feats they have achieved subsequently. For Chandimal, that audacious 162* against India from Galle in 2015, was such an innings.#AUSvsSL pic.twitter.com/jLhxFVs5rR
