Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins faced the media after his side won the second Ashes 2023 Test. He faced the ire of the media as the center of the debate was Jonny Bairstow’s runout. For the unversed, the England wicketkeeper got run out as he was found outside of his crease by Alex Carey. He thought that the over was called and he left the crease. However, the umpires hadn’t called the over, and Bairstow was caught napping.

After the game, England skipper Ben Stokes said that if he was the fielding team captain, he would have wanted to win the game like this. He raised questions about when the umpire calls the over.

“My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called ‘over’? Does the square leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was.

“If the shoe was on the other foot, I would’ve had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No.”

Alex Carey did nothing wrong: Pat Cummins

On the other hand, Cummins backed his wicketkeeper batter. The latter said that Carey did nothing as he saw Bairstow moving out of the crease early.

“I think Carey saw it happen a few balls previously, three or four balls previously, and there’s no pause, catch it, straightaway and throw at the stumps. I thought it was totally fair play. That’s how the rule is. Some people might disagree. That’s how I saw it,” Cummins told Sky TV during the post-match presentation.

Talking about the Ashes 2023, Australia is leading by 2-0. For the first time since 2001, Australia is leading the Ashes series in England by 2-0. In that series, the Aussies won by 4-1.
