Rashid Khan, who was the stand-in skipper for the Gujarat Titans in place of HSI ardik Pandya in the recently ended IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders, took a hattrick while GT were defending 204 runs against KKR at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad.

Rashid came to bowl in the 17th over when KKR required 50 runs off the last four overs. On the very first ball, Rashid dismissed Andre Russel to give GT a big breakthrough. Wicketkeeper KS Bharat took the catch behind the wicket. In the next ball, Sunil Narine lost his wicket trying to take on Rashid but ended up giving a catch to Jayant Yadav at deep mid-wicket. After that, Shardul Thakur, who played match-winning innings in the last match against RCB, ended up getting out by LBW on his first ball as Rashid Khan completed hattrick as GT got way ahead in the game.

However, it wasn’t enough for GT as the KKR batter Rinku Singh went on to smash five consecutive sixes in the last over as KKR registered a thrilling victory in the last ball of the match. Rinku remained unbeaten on 48 runs off 21 balls hitting one four and six sixes.

Despite the loss, Rashid became the first player to get a hat trick in the ongoing season of IPL. The right-arm spinner from Afghanistan ended up with the figures of 4/37 in his spell of four overs.

The first-ever hattrick in the history of IPL was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji for Chennai Super Kings against Punjab Kings in 2008. Along with a hattrick, Balaji also took a five-wicket haul in that match and ended with the figures of 5/24. While Yuvraj Singh got this achievement twice in 2009 against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers. Meanwhile, Amit Mishra is the only player to take three hattrick in the tournament’s history in 2008, 2011, and 2013.
