Dhawan has not played for India since a one-day international against Bangladesh in December 2022. The 37-year-old opener has not given up hope of representing his country in the World Cup later this year. Dhawan, one of India’s best openers in 50-over cricket, was dropped from the squad after a poor run that included three games in Bangladesh in December.

When Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were rested in New Zealand in November, the southpaw took charge of the Indian Team. Shubman Gill was brought in at Dhawan’s expense, and the young opener hasn’t looked back since. Back-to-back strong performances have helped him cement his position as an opener on the team.

Dhawan can stay calm and run the game: Irfan Pathan

Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan believes that Punjab captain Dhawan’s calmness in the upcoming Indian T20 League 2023 could be a great foil for English batter Liam Livingstone’s explosiveness. According to the former Indian all-rounder, Dhawan can be composed at the crease and act as an anchor, while Livingstone can up the ante with his power hitting from the other end.

“Liam Livingstone, according to me, is a destructive batter. His playing style can match Shikhar Dhawan’s because Dhawan can stay calm and run the game. Meanwhile, if you see Livingstone, he plays like fire. So, if you look at it, their hot-cold combination can be very good,” he said.
