In 2018, when Prithvi Shaw scored a century in his debut Test match, he was expected to reach immense heights. Shaw is struggling to make a comeback for the Indian team, in a disappointing turn of events. Virender Sehwag was displeased with Shaw’s repeated errors in drawing a hard-hitting comparison with Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Sehwag expressed his outrage at Shaw’s dismissal against Gujarat in the Indian T20 League 2023, explaining that he has been dismissed in that manner numerous times and refuses to learn from his mistakes. Mohammed Shami delivered a shortish delivery outside off, and Shaw miscued the pull shot, sending it straight to the fielder at mid-on.

Sehwag reminded Shaw that his competitors have gotten far ahead of him in the race, pointing to Gill, who played for the same India U-19 team as Shaw, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 600-plus runs in the Indian T20 League 2021 season.

“He has been dismissed playing those kind of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL. He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600-odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores,” he said.

Shaw’s batting failure was his second in the Indian T20 League 2023. After being dismissed for 7 off 5 against Gujarat in Delhi’s homecoming game on Tuesday, he only managed 12 off 9 against Lucknow last week.

Shaw is no longer in contention in ODIs but was recently selected for the T20I series against New Zealand in January, but did not play because the management preferred Gill as the primary opener.
