The Apex Cricket Council has named England captain Ben Stokes the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2022. The 31-year-old, who led England to nine wins from ten Tests last year, was crucial to the team’s success with both the bat and the ball. He scored 870 runs at an average of 36.25 and took 26 wickets at an average of 31.19 in 2022.

After a dismal start to the season for the red ball side, Stokes took over as England captain. Under his captaincy and with Brendon McCullum as Test coach, England adopted a more aggressive and win-at-all-costs approach in Tests, dubbed ‘Bazball’ after the latter.

Under his leadership, England thrashed New Zealand and South Africa at home, thrashed India in a one-off Test in Southampton, and then whitewashed Pakistan in a three-match series. In 2022, England’s scoring rate of 4.13 across 15 Tests was the second-highest in history and the highest since Australia in 1910. These statistics include the away defeat to the West Indies and the Ashes loss under Joe Root. The team struck at a game-changing 4.77 per over in the matches in which Stokes led England.

In the meantime, star batter Joe Root has lavished praise on red-ball captain Ben Stokes, calling him the “best all-rounder in the world”. In an interview with the timesofIndia.com, Joe Root was asked whether Ben Stokes is the world’s best all-rounder.

He responded: “Yes. I’m biased. But yes. One thing that Ben can do is he can win a game on his own. He can turn things with the ball. He needs just one spell to turn things upside down. The other thing is his captaincy. We’ve seen how good a leader he is. He is a brilliant leader – both as a captain and as a senior player. He leads from the front and his actions, on the field, are just amazing.”
