Shreyas Iyer may miss not only the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, which begins March 17 but also the first half of the Indian T20 League 2023, which begins on March 31. Iyer leads the Kolkata team in the Indian T20 League.

“He’s definitely out of the IPL till the end of April,” a source told the Times Of India. After the fourth Test against Australia in Ahmedabad, Indian captain Rohit Sharma gave a bleak initial assessment of Iyer’s injury, saying that the India batter “does not seem to be doing that well.”

Iyer is recovering from an injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after failing to bat in the fourth and final Test against Australia. Iyer flew out of Ahmedabad before the Test to have his back examined. After nearly two days on the field, Iyer complained of swelling in his lower back during the Ahmedabad Test.

“Poor guy. It just was such an unfortunate incident. He had to wait all day (the second day) to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well,” Rohit said.

During the final Test, the Indian Cricket Board informed in a statement that a “specialist’s opinion will be sought” to treat Iyer’s back. Due to the injury, the middle-order batter missed the home ODIs against New Zealand as well as the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Nagpur last month. Iyer’s absence may allow Sanju Samson, India’s wicketkeeper-batter, to return to the ODI squad for the Australia series.

In the meantime, Twitter was in shock at hearing that Iyer might miss the Indian T20 League. They were left wondering as to who would lead Kolkata in his absence in the first half of the tournament.
