Lanka Premier League 2022: Top three contenders for Season 3

The third edition of the Lanka Premier League is going to start on 6 December 2022. Initially, this league got postponed in July due to the economic crisis in the country. They had issues conducting that tournament properly at that time. Jaffna Kings will begin the tournament as the defending champions in the last two seasons.

They will play Galle Gladiators in the tournament opener in Hambantota. Big-name players like Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis will be in action. However, after such an economic crisis situation, this season will be a huge boost for Sri Lankan fans.    

Here are the top three teams that can lift the trophy in the Lanka Premier League 2022:

Kandy Falcons

This team can give good competition this team around as the franchise have gathered good quality players like Hasaranga, Carlos Brathwaite, and Dewald Brevis. Wanindu Hasaranga will be the captain of this team. He has enjoyed great form with the ball in recent times for Sri Lanka. In the Asia Cup 2022, Hasaranga took nine wickets in six matches.

Then, in the 20-20 World Cup, he was the highest wicket-taker as he picked up 15 wickets in eight matches. He is also the current number-one-ranked bowler in T20Is. So, he will look to guide Kandy Flacons to the glory this time around. In the last season of the Lanka Premier League, they finished last with four points in eight matches.      

Galle Gladiators

This team was the runners-up in the last two seasons of the Lanka Premier League. Kusal Mendis will be the skipper for this team. Apart from him, many star players like Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, and Azam Khan will be in action for this team. In the recently concluded 20-20 World Cup, Kusal Mendis finished fifth in the table in terms of scoring runs. 

He scored 223 runs in eight matches in the tournament. Imad Wasim can be a good option for this team as he recently managed to win the Caribbean Premier League for Jamaica Tallawahs. So, these players can help Galle Gladiators to win this league this time around.     

Jaffna Kings

This franchise has won both seasons of the Lanka Premier League so far. Sri Lanka’s veteran all-rounder, Thisara Perera will look to win this league for the third consecutive season. Apart from him, Dhanajaya de Silva, Shoaib Malik, and Maheesh Theeksana will be in action. Tristan Stubbs will be a player to watch out for in this franchise.

Another exciting player can be Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbad. Recently, the Kolkata franchise of the Indian T20 League traded him for the next season from the Gujarat franchise. So, all these players can play a crucial role once again for this franchise in this season of the Lanka Premier League.
