In the 62nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023, Gujarat Titans beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs to qualify for the playoffs. GT is now set to play Qualifier 1 of the tournament at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Riding on Shubman Gill’s maiden IPL century GT posted a hefty total of 188 runs in 20 overs. In response, SRH crumbled against Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma and fell 34 runs short of the target.

Earlier, SRH skipper Aiden Markram chose to bat first after winning the toss. GT got off to a bad start after being asked to bat first, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar knocked Wriddhiman Saha for a three-ball duck. Gill and Sai Sudarshan contributed 147 runs for the second wicket after his departure. Sai Sudarshan began his incredible innings with a run-a-ball knock and afterwards paced his innings. Sudarshan in his innings missed out a well-deserved half-century as he scored 47 runs off 36 balls, including six boundaries and a six. He was dismissed by Marco Jansen.

His dismissal opened the floodgates for the hosts as GT lost seven wickets in just 40 runs. Skipper Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan all failed to capitalise on the start given by Gill and others. Meanwhile, Gill completed his maiden IPL ton by scoring 101 runs off 58 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and a six. He was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who clinched three wickets in his last over and went back with a five-wicket haul.

Mohammed Shami derailed SRH’s run chase

Chasing 189 runs SRH got a terrible start opener, Abhishek Sharma, Anmolpreet Singh and Rahul Tripathi were dismissed within the first 13 balls. They were dismissed by star India pacer Mohammed Shami and youngster Yash Dayal. However, Shami didn’t stop there he dismissed SRH skipper Aiden Markram for 10 runs off 10 balls on the very first ball of the fifth over.

SRH failed to make a comeback after early wickets apart from Henric Klaasen and Bhuvneshwar Kumar other batters failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Klaasen in his innings scored 64 runs off 44 balls with the help of three sixes and four boundaries. He was dismissed by Shami in slog overs. Notably, in middle overs pacer Mohit Sharma clinched three back-to-back wickets to continue GT’s dominance. With this victory, GT became the first team to qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2023.
