Narayan Jagadeesan of Tamil Nadu broke a number of records on Monday, becoming the first cricketer in history to score five List-A centuries in a row. Playing in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, Jagadeesan continued his incredible form against Arunachal Pradesh, smashing a 77-ball century before breaking the record for the highest individual score in List A history.

He went on to clatter a mammoth 277 off 141 deliveries during a stunning assault in which he scored 25 fours and 15 sixes. Jagadeesan scored the joint-fastest double-century in the format (off 114 deliveries), the fastest by an Indian cricketer.

He came agonisingly close to becoming the first player in history to score a triple-century in a one-day match, but he was bowled out in the 42nd over. By that point, however, the 26-year-old had set a new record for the highest-ever score in List A history.

With this, the Indian batter broke a 22-year-old record held by Alistair Brown of England, who set the then-record for the highest individual score in List A cricket when he scored 268 for Surrey against Glamorgan in 2002. Jagadeesan also broke Rohit Sharma’s ODI record of 268 runs, which was the highest individual total by an Indian in the format.

Jagadeesan also shared a 416-run partnership with fellow opener Sai Sudharsan, adding 416 runs – the most ever for the first wicket in List A cricket. Sudharsan scored 154 off 102 balls, including 19 fours and two sixes.

Tamil Nadu is the first team in List A history to score 500 or more runs in an innings. They finished with 506/2 in 50 overs at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

In the meantime, Twitter was overwhelmed with Jagadeesan’s record-breaking innings. The Chennai team in the Indian T20 League recently dropped him from their squad, and the fans questioned their retention policy. “Not CSK… jagadeesan Knocking the door of Indian Team 5 centuries. With one double century is not a joke..in any format…” a fan wrote.
