Australia back to winning ways as they take 1-0 lead against England

Australia and England contested against each other in the first match of the three-match ODI series on November 17, Thursday and it was the Australian skipper Pat Cummins who called it right at the toss and elected to field first.

However, the English batters struggled to cope with the wrath of Australian pacers as Jason Roy made his way back to the pavilion of Mitchell Starc’s threatening inswinger for just 6 runs and put England in deep trouble right away.

With Philip Salt and James Vince perishing for just 14 runs and 5 runs respectively, it was Dawid Malan who steadied the innings and scored a fighting century to get England past the 200-run mark. With his well-crafted 134, Malan pushed the Three Lions’ total to 287 and David Willey’s 34 played a huge role in that as well.

In return, during the chase, the Australian openers David Warner and Travis Head set the tone for the team with their 100-run partnership. With Head returning after scoring a stellar 69, the Kangaroos lost their first wicket after putting on 147 runs on the board.

Warner, who inched closer to the three-figure mark, perished for 86 runs, failing to achieve the feat and Steve Smith, who came in at Number 3, remained unbeaten till the end for a well-made 80. While Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey departed for 4 and 21 runs respectively, Cameron Green joined hands with Smith in the middle and took Australia home.

The Kangaroos chased down the target with 6 wickets to spare and took a 1-0 lead in the series. As far as England are concerned, the team looked out of touch and would look to make a strong comeback in the next outing on Saturday. Australia, on the other hand, won their first ODI under the leadership of Cummins and would hope to carry on with the momentum and seal the series in the next match to be played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.
