New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson gets ruled out from clash against Netherlands

Kane Williamson is all set to miss another major encounter for New Zealand in the ODI World Cup 2023. The batter is trying to regain 100% match fitness after he suffered a knee injury earlier this year. Williamson will be absent from New Zealand’s encounter against Netherlands on October 9 in the tournament, but he hopes to be back in the lineup against Bangladesh four days later.

The New Zealand skipper, who is expected to sit out the Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, trained with the team following their convincing victory against England in the tournament opener. While Williamson attempts to regain his health, the presence of quick bowlers Tim Southee as well as Lockie Ferguson could help New Zealand.

In New Zealand’s Cricket World Cup practice games versus Pakistan as well as South Africa, the 33-year-old batted but was not put in danger on the field as he recovers from a damaged anterior cruciate ligament sustained earlier this year.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead spoke on Sunday as he said, “Kane’s been progressing very well. I think the fielding is still the element for him that he’s just got to get a little bit higher, and he gets a little bit more trust in his body.”

He added, “But he’s progressing really well and we are pretty confident that he will be playing the third match for us. We’ve got another training to get through today, so we’ll finalise the team (for the match against Netherlands) once we’ve got through that training.”

New Zealand’s dominant win over England in ODI World Cup 2023

With 82 balls remaining, New Zealand defeated England with nine wickets when they chased down a total of 283, with twin hundreds from Devon Conway (152*) as well as Rachin Ravindra (123*) in their first match of the marquee event.

As New Zealand subsequently had the opportunity to switch to spin, Trent Boult along with Matt Henry seized the new ball as they contained their adversary for the thrilling Cricket World Cup 2019 final.
