Punjab and Hyderabad locked horns in the 28th game of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The latter elected to field first after winning the toss. Their decision was proven right by the bowlers as they took four wickets in the first eight overs. Stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan (8), who was leading the team in the absence of Mayank Agarwal, was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Prabhsimran Singh (14), who was playing his first game, was dismissed by T. Natarajan. Jonny Bairstow was then trapped lbw by Jagadeesha Suchith in the seventh over of the innings. Post which, Jitesh Sharma was caught and bowled by Umran Malik. At 61/4, Punjab were tottering. The possibly being bowled out looked like a reality. However, the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Liam Livingstone stitched a partnership of 71 runs.

Khan and Livingstone then got out to Kumar in the 17th and 19th over of the innings respectively. Malik finished the innings off with a three-wicket maiden. His over also saw a run-out and thus, the opposition were bowled out for 151. In reply, the 2016-champions lost the wicket of their skipper Kane Williamson (3). He was caught by Shikhar Dhawan off Kagiso Rabada’s bowling. The right-handed batter struggled in his innings which lasted nine balls.

In came Rahul Tripathi, who had played a sensational knock against Kolkata in the previous game. In this game, he hit 34 off 22 before being dismissed by leggie Rahul Chahar. Two overs later, Chahar took his second wicket in the form of Abhishek Sharma (31). Sharma was caught by Khan with the score reading 77/3.

After which, the likes of Nicholas Pooran (35*) and Aiden Markram (41*) stitched an unbeaten 75-run partnership to win the game for their side with eight balls to spare. With this win, the Kane Williamson-led side have now registered their fourth consecutive win and have jumped to the fourth place in the points table.
