Jailer actor Marimuthu dies due to heart attack while dubbing for TV serial

G Marimuthu, a Tamil actor-director who was most recently seen in Rajinikanth’s Jailer, died on Friday.

G. Marimuthu, a Tamil actor, died on September 8 morning after suffering a heart attack while dubbing for a television serial in a studio. He rose to prominence recently when he portrayed the villain ‘Aadhi Gunasekaran’ in ‘Ethir Neechal,’ a Sun TV television series. Marimuthu was from Pasumalai in the Theni district. He, like many others of his generation, fled to Chennai to pursue a career as a film director. His wife, son, and daughter survive him.

Also, he assisted Vasanth, Manirathinam, S.J. Suryah, and Seeman as an assistant director. ‘Kannum Kannum’ and ‘Pulival’ were his two films. He has appeared in over 50 films, including the current Jailer starring Rajinikanth and Pariyerum Perumal. He was also a writer. Ramesh Bala, a film trade analyst and industry insider, confirmed the story on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday, adding that G Marimuthu age 57 who was most recognised for his role as Ethirneechal in the Tamil television series Ethirneechal, passed away. He has also worked as an assistant director for filmmaker Mani Ratnam, among others.

Condolences for Marimuthu

Ramesh Bala tweeted, “Shocking: Popular Tamil character actor Marimuthu died this morning due to cardiac arrest. He recently gained a large fan base for his TV Serial talks… May his soul rest in peace! He was 57…”  G Marimuthu reportedly fainted on Friday morning at 8.30 a.m. during dubbing for his TV series Ethirneechal in Chennai. According to Johnson, a public relations expert working in the South film industry, he was brought to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

In another Tweet, he wrote, “Shocking… director-actor Marimuthu died at 8.30 a.m. today. Because of a cardiac arrest. RIP Marimuthu. It has been confirmed that actor Marimuthu (58), who was dubbing for the Ethireneechel serial this morning suddenly fainted and was taken to the nearby Surya Hospital, where he died due to chest pain…” 

Actor Radikaa Sarathkumar tweeted, “So sad and shocked to hear of his passing of Marimuthu have worked with him a man with talent, gone so soon. Our hearts go out to his family.” A fan tweeted, “Deeply saddened to hear about the untimely demise of the versatile actor Marimuthu. Jailer was his most recent blockbuster. On both the large and small screens, he was a star. A devastating blow to our industry. May his soul find peace.”

According to the web, he began his career as a waiter in hotels before meeting lyricist Vairamuthu and finally landing a post as an assistant director working with Rajkiran on films such as Aranmanai Kili (1993) and Ellame En Rajasthan (1995). Marimuthu went on to work as an assistant director for prominent filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Seeman, and SJ Surya. He also collaborated on Silambarasan’s Manmadhan as a co-director.
