‘It’s very hard as an overseas spinner’ : Adam Zampa on going unsold during mega auction

Published on

Adam Zampa has been absolutely sensational in the last 12-15 months. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that he is currently one of the best white-ball spinners in the world. As a matter of fact, he played an influential role in Australia’s title-winning campaign during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

With 13 wickets in seven games, Zampa was the second-highest wicket-taker during the mega-event. However, he still went unsold during the recently concluded mega auction for the Indian T20 league. It came as an absolute shocker to everybody as the leggie has been fantastic in the recent past.

Thus, Zampa recently expressed his disappointment about finding no bidders in the auction. While speaking to cricket.com.au, he said that he was keen to return to the biggest T20 league in the world. He stated that he felt “flat” about it.

“I missed out at the ITL auction unfortunately. I’m a little bit flat about that to be honest. I thought if there was ever a year that I was going to get the opportunity over there again, it would have been this year. Just with the way that I’m bowling and, from a personal point of view, I just feel like my game at a point where I just want to be playing the best cricket possible,” said Adam Zampa.

The 29-year-old felt that after international cricket, it’s the toughest 20 that carries the most weightage. He stated that it’s very hard for overseas spinners during auctions. It is to be noted that alongside him, several other top-class spinners such as Tabraiz Shamsi and Adil Rashid went unsold as well.

“International cricket is that and then the next thing after that is the ITL. It’s very hard as an overseas spinner, particularly if you’re just a specialist spinner who’s not so much of a mystery spinner. The mega auction, the way it panned out, they spent a lot of money on fast bowlers, a lot of money on allrounders and even batsmen don’t get great money. They get okay money,” he said
