‘It’s not Chennai’s season’ – Chennai’s campaign in jeopardy after another crushing defeat

Published on

Chennai and Punjab faced off each other in the 11th game of the Indian T20 League at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Chennai came into the game after two losses against Kolkata and Lucknow respectively. On the other hand, Punjab had lost their last game against Kolkata. The Ravindra Jadeja-led side won the toss and chose to bowl first, keeping the dew factor in mind.

The team had a great start as Mukesh Choudhary took the wicket of Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal. In the next over, Bhanuka Rajapaksa was run out due to the athleticism of MS Dhoni. With this, the Mayank Agarwal-led side was tottering at 14/2 in 1.2 overs. However, the partnership of 95 runs between Shikhar Dhawan (33) and Liam Livingstone helped the team recover from the early jolts.

The partnership helped the team reach 109 runs in 10 overs before Dhawan was accounted for by Dwayne Bravo. Livingstone (60) followed in the next over against Ravindra Jadeja, trying to cut the ball. At 115/4, the team was looking to get past 200 runs but was restricted to 180/8, thanks to good death bowling from the Men In Yellow.

For Chennai, the likes of Chris Jordan and Dwaine Pretorius took two wickets each while the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, and Mukesh Choudhary took one each. In reply, the defending champions had a horrible start as they lost five wickets for 36 runs. Debutant Vaibhav Arora took two wickets while Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh and Odean Smith took one each.

Shivam Dube (57) and MS Dhoni stitched a partnership of 62 runs before the former was taken out by Livingstone. Dwayne Bravo (0) followed the next ball as he was caught and bowled. The 2014 finalists didn’t take long to wrap up the game as they restricted their opponents to 126 all-out, winning the game by 54 runs.
