Punjab and Bangalore faced each other at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. It was the 60th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Winning the toss, the Faf du Plessis-led team elected to bowl first. Their bowlers bowled well in patches. Two batters from the Punjab-based franchise managed to get to a score of more than fifty. The Men In Red and Gold reached 209/9 riding on half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow (66) and Liam Livingstone (70).

Apart from them, no one could cross the 30-run mark. Such was the impact of Bairstow and Livingstone’s innings. For the 2016-finalists, Wanindu Hasarnaga bowled an absolutely sensational spell. His returns were 4-0-15-2, which is astonishing as the other bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Apart from him, Harshal Patel bowled well with a spell of 4-0-34-4.

Pacers such as Josh Hazlewood and Mohammed Siraj gave away 100 runs in six overs combined, and couldn’t pick a wicket. On the other hand, Glenn Maxwell and Shahbaz Ahmed had a tough day with the ball as they gave away 57 runs in six overs combined, and picked one wicket each. In reply, the three-time finalists started well by scoring 33 runs in 3.2 overs.

Former skipper Virat Kohli (20) looked like getting back to the groove, but couldn’t connect a pull shot. He was given not out, but the DRS showed that the ball had hit the gloves before lobbying to the short fine fielder, Rahul Chahar caught the ball, and Kagiso Rabada took the first wicket. DRS helped the 2014-finalists once again in the next over as they got the wicket of Du Plessis.

He was given not out by the on-field umpire but the replays suggested the ball had edged the bat, before the keeper Jitesh Sharma collected it. In came Mahipal Lomror who hit a second-ball six, but perished on the next ball. At 40/3, Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar took the team to 104. However, their wickets in the space of one over meant that the team went from 104/3 to 142/9. The team finished on 155/9 and thus, lost the game by 54 runs.
