Hyderabad and Kolkata faced each at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune in the 61st match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Winning the toss, the two-time winners chose to bat first as the wickets have been slowing up in the recent past. Batting first, they couldn’t capitalize on the decision as they lost five wickets for 94 runs. Players such as Nitish Rana (26) and Ajinkya Rahane (28) got starts but couldn’t convert them into a big score.

Venkatesh Iyer (6) couldn’t carry the form which he gained in the last game against Mumbai. The likes of Sam Billings (34) and Andre Russell (49*) took the team to 177/6. For the Orange Army, Umran Malik took three wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, and T. Natarajan took one each. Washington Sundar bowled well until he was asked to bowl the last over of the innings. During the 20th over, he was hit for three sixes by Russell.

In reply, skipper Kane Williamson struggled while Abhishek Sharma was at his fluent best. Williamson scored a 17-ball nine before he decided enough is enough. He tried to play the scoop shot only to miss the ball and lost his wicket against Russell in the last over of the powerplay. The in-form Rahul Tripathi (9) also struggled with the bat in his 12-ball stay before he was caught and bowled by Tim Southee.

Notably, the regular wickets became a feature of the innings as Hyderabad couldn’t stitch a big partnership. Also, this meant that the required run rate increased to more than 20 at one stage. The team was eventually restricted to 123/8, with only Abhishek Sharma (43) and Aiden Markram (32) contributing substantially. The men in orange lost the game by 54 runs. This has not only impacted their chances in the playoffs, but has also affected their Net Run Rate (NRR).

Their NRR has dropped to (-0.270) which means that now they need to win their remaining two games by huge margins, and hope for some of the results to go their way. Also, this is their seventh loss in the tournament, which means they can only reach to maximum of 14 points, which might not be enough in the end.
