Gujarat and Rajasthan faced each other in the first playoff game of the Indian T20 League in Kolkata. The Hardik Pandya-led side won the toss and elected to bowl first on a fresh pitch. The 2008-winners lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal early. However, skipper Samson played a captain’s innings of 47 runs off just 26 balls, including five fours and three sixes.

However, his knock was cut short. While trying to complete his fifty with a six, he was dismissed by left-arm spinner Sai Kishore. Devdutt Padikkal came and played a fluent innings of 28 runs off 20 balls before it was ended abruptly by opposition skipper Hardik Pandya. Jos Buttler, who was struggling at 39 off 38, then took the team total from 127/3 to 188/6. Buttler scored 89 off 56 before he was run out in the last over.

In-form Shimron Hetmyer failed to carry his form as got out to Mohammed Shami on the individual score of four runs. Riyan Parag also scored four runs before he got run out in the last over. For the Indian T20 League debutants, Shami, Yash Dayal, Sai Kishore, and Pandya took one wicket each. In reply, they got off to a poor start as Wriddhiman Saha bagged a silver duck facing Trent Boult in the first over.

Shubman Gill and Matthew Wade were struggling at the crease in the first few overs as the team could reach 31/1 in four overs. The momentum of the game then started to change in the favor of the batting team in the fifth over. The duo scored 16 runs off Boult in the over. They finished the powerplay by hammering 17 runs off Ravichandran Ashwin.

However, the Pink Brigade started to pull the game back with 15 runs in three overs and the wicket of Gill. The opener was run out in the eighth over of the innings. Two overs later, Wade (35) was caught by Buttler trying to hit a short ball from Obed McCoy for a six. At 85/3, skipper Pandya and David Miller stitched an unbeaten partnership of 106 runs and won the game for the team by seven wickets.
