Indian captain Rohit Sharma tests positive for Covid-19

India’s Test skipper, Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid-19. It has come as a big blow to the team as he might not play in the fifth Test against England. As per a statement by the BCCI, Rohit Sharma is currently in isolation and will undergo an RT PCR test on Sunday.

The fifth Test match is scheduled to be played from 1st to 5th July 2022. Notably, Rohit Sharma was part of the Indian team which is playing a four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire.

Rohit Sharma opened the innings for India in the first innings but he didn’t come out to bat in the second innings. He managed to score 25 runs in the first innings before getting out. If Rohit Sharma misses out on the fifth Test, then India will be coming with a completely new opening pair.

#TeamIndia Captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team,” BCCI wrote on Twitter.

Notably, KL Rahul isn’t part of the squad due to his groin injury and we could see Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara could open the innings for the team. However, the management is hopeful that Rohit Sharma will get fit before the start of the first Test.

India lead the Test series against England 2-1. Rohit had earlier captained India to a 2-0 home Test series win over Sri Lanka this year. If he recovers in time for the match in Edgbaston, then it would be his first Test match as captain of the Indian team away from home.

According to reports, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the side for the fifth Test match against England. If Rohit Sharma won’t get fit by that time, then Bumrah could become the second fast bowler after Kapil Dev to lead the Indian Test team for 35 years.
