IND vs SL: Ravindra Jadeja achieves rare feat with all-round performance

Published on

The first test of IND vs SL series might well be termed as Jadeja’s Test with the way things are turning up at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Earlier on Day 2 of the Test, Jadeja scored a record breaking 175 runs taking India’s total to 574/8.

Jadeja’s form continued with the ball in hand as he took 5 wickets on day 3 during Sri Lanka’s first innings. This performance of a 150+ score and 5 wickets in the same test makes him only the sixth player in the history of Test cricket to achieve the feat.

Vinoo Mankad, Denis Atkinson, Polly Umrigar, Gary Sobers and Mushtaq Mohammad are the other players who have achieved this rare feat.

Sri Lanka resumed day 3 on 138 for 4 in their first innings with Pathum Nissanka and Charitha Asalanka at the crease. Asalanka and Nissanka stitched a partnership of 58 runs before Bumrah got the better of Asalanka. Nissanka got past his half-century but kept losing partners at the other end. Jadeja’s rampage through the Sri Lankan batting lineup started with the wicket of Nilroshan Dickwella, who failed to impress with the bat as a senior member of the team.

After Dickwellla’s dismissal, the last four Sri Lankan wickets fell for the cost of just 10 runs. Three of these four wickets were taken by Ravindra Jadeja, while Shami picked up Lasith Embuldeniya. Jadeja finished the first innings with his figures reading 5 wickets for 41 runs from 13 overs.

Sri Lanka, trailing by 400 runs at the end of the first innings has been asked to follow on and are 10 for the loss of 1 wicket at Lunch on day 3.
